Spring

This oil painting is from a study I painted several years ago in Ormond Beach, Florida, in an area local bicyclists call The Loop. The old natives like me know it simply as Tomoka, and jumping in the car we’d say we were going cruising through Tomoka.

It’s a beautiful natural area, an oasis in Volusia County with a variety of ecosystems and wildlife. The Timucuan Indians, Florida’s true natives lived here thousands of years ago. Thanks to the persistent efforts of people like Walter Boardman in the 1970′s, and the Florida Park Service much of it has been saved from encroaching development.

For me it represents decades of experiences and memories with good friends and family, many gone. Painting it is a way of honoring the land and all those who fought to protect it, a celebration of their achievements. Sometimes we forget the things we take for granted and enjoy were paid for at a great price.
